We’re in the stories told on stage. We’re in every light cue and set piece. We’re in the very first step a kid takes in his tap shoes. We’re in the drive that it takes to push yourself to try something new. We’re in the lifelong friendships that began on the first day of a rehearsal. We’re in every smile, laugh and tear of each audience member as they’re watching a show. We’re in the conversations had on the car ride home. We are not just in our community; we are our community. The moments, feelings, conversations and relationships that are created by experiencing live theatre—that’s Springfield Little Theatre.
Springfield Little Theatre has been creating the magic of live theatre since 1934. With a history spanning 85 years, SLT has developed into one of the premier, non-profit, community theatres in the country. Known for having high standards and delivering on the quality expectations audiences have come to know and appreciate, the theatre has grown to produce seven mainstage productions with dedicated set & costume design departments; six Education Series productions; countless productions in the SLT Studio Theatre; a nationally-renowned education department reaching over 30,000 kids a year; the owner of two historic buildings: The Landers Theatre and the old McDaniel School which now houses the SLT Education Department and is now known as The Judith Enyeart Reynolds School of the Performing Arts for Springfield Little Theatre; and much more every season.
The growth that Springfield’s theatre has seen in recent years has allowed for the theatre to reach even greater numbers by expanding outreach efforts into school systems with SLT On Wheels, bringing live performances into the schools themselves. Also, SLT has been producing shows in other venues such as Nathan P. Murphy’s and The Old Glass Place, partnering with other arts organizations like The Gillioz Theatre, and the theatre’s youth performance troupes perform regularly at local festivals and events. This commitment to being fully integrated into the Springfield community is what makes Springfield Little Theatre a true community theatre.
With only 12 full-time employees and a number of part-time staff, SLT is a volunteer-driven organization with over 700 volunteers a year participating in shows both onstage and behind-the-scenes painting and constructing sets, costumes, props and more. Springfield Little Theatre is funded solely by ticket sales, donations and corporate partnerships with no funding from the city or county. When you purchase a ticket to an SLT show, you are investing in the arts in Springfield and allowing Springfield Little Theatre to continue to grow.
